High-net-worth investors asking about private lending returns — what do you tell them?

I've had 3 conversations in the past month with HNW individuals who are interested in private lending as an investment. They're asking about returns, risk, and how to get started. I'm not a fund manager and I'm not raising capital, but I want to be helpful and potentially build relationships that could be useful later. What do you tell people in this situation?

Lorraine, be very careful here. The moment you start facilitating introductions between investors and borrowers (even informally), you may be crossing into securities territory. Talk to an attorney before you have any more of these conversations. That said, if someone asks me about private lending as an investment, I point them to established lenders/funds I know and trust. I don't try to be their investment advisor.

Thomas is right. The line between "being helpful" and "acting as a placement agent" is thinner than most people realize. Get legal advice before you continue these conversations.

This is really helpful context — I had no idea there were legal considerations here. Going to pause these conversations until I talk to an attorney. Thank you both.
